Purcerverance Boatfit, similar to the Bikefit process used in cycling, is a method of Custom Rigging using the individual’s body anthropometrics including, height, weight, limb lengths, flexibilities and rowing measurements (Fitdata) to determine boat, rigger and oar setup. To enhance the analysis of the Fitdata collected, Purcerverance is now asking customers to include a video of their rowing on an erg along with their Custom Measurements Form.
The video of the athlete rowing on an erg, at race rate and race pressure should capture five strokes at this level. Video should be done using a smartphone held stationary, to the side of the erg, and at the level of the oar handle. This video will provide support to the Fitdata measurements submitted and confirm rowing movements and positions to enhance the Boatfit process.
1) Download the below Custom Measurement Form.docx (download below)
and complete all information. For instructions on how to measure download
the Custom Measurement Guide or see the Fluidesign Measurement Guide
on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtiG79g0adDkvBxkZsUORnw
2) Record a video of your rowing on an erg at race rate and race pressure
capturing five strokes at this level. Video should be done using a smartphone
held stationary, to the side of the erg, and at the level of the oar handle.
3) Email/send the completed form to Mike Purcer at purcerverance@gmail.com
4) You will receive a PayPal invoice ($226 CAD) that can be paid by
credit card or PayPal account.
5) You will receive a Purcerverance Custom Rigging Dimensions sheet that
details the rigging measurement settings for your boat, rigger and oar as well
as a Custom Rigging Graphic of your stroke based on the measurements
provided that shows your new stroke position and setup. You will also receive
a PDF copy of RIGGING by Mike Purcer that details rigging measurements
and much more.
6) Rigging setup. Adjust your equipment as outlined on the Purcerverance
Custom Rigging Dimensions sheet. Email Mike with any questions or
concerns about the rigging setup.
7) Follow-up included! Once you are comfortable with the new rigging. Use the
Video Capture Setup process (https://purcerverance.ca/rigging-analysis) to
record your rowing and send the video to purcerverance@gmail.com.
Purcerverance will analyze and evaluate the rigging setup as it relates to your
rowing technique and power application. You will receive a printout including
any recommendations for adjustments to improve rigging efficiency and your
boat speed curve analyzing your technique that identifies opportunities to
improve performance.
Download the below Purcerverance Custom Measurement Form,
1. Complete form with all measurements
2. Complete video as outlined on form
3. Email form and video to purcerverance@gmail.com
Download the Custom Measurement Guide for measuring details and help.
Video of athlete rowing on erg will supplement the Athlete Measurement Form information.
Boatfit Erg Video Capture:
1. Smartphone setup
- perpendicular to erg at mid slide
- setup at oar handle height
- held stationary on support
- setup 10 to 15 feet from erg
- capture erg and athlete in full screen
2. Rowing technique as in shell (do not extend layback or over reach)
3. Record five strokes at race rate and race pressure
4. Ensure athlete is fully warmed-up before video capture
The Custom Rigging Dimension Sheet details the recommended measurements for the boat, rigger and oar adjustments based on the individual’s Fitdata which also listed on the sheet. This sheet specifies the span, outboard and inboard that determine the rigging load geared to supporting an ideal Drive Time. The work through, footstop distance, inboard, outboard and span influence the effective stoke length and stroke position beside the boat. The footstop settings of angle and height provide comfort efficiency for power transfer. An oarlock pitch and height are recommended with follow- up suggestions at the bottom of the sheet. Along will all the adjustable settings for the boat, rigger and oar the sheet shows the geometry of the stroke such as catch and finish angles and stroke and arc lengths.
The Custom Rigging Graphic Sheet displays the rowing stroke positions of catch and finish as well as the related rigging dimensions. The graphic is developed to provide a visual of the stroke as it relates to the hands in the finish position and the athlete’s Fitdata stoke length.
Part of the Custom Rigging process includes a follow-up Purcerverance Rigging Analysis to ensure the efficiency of the setup. Once the athlete is comfortable with the new rigging a video file taken using the video capture standards as outlined on YouTube (see https://youtu.be/JGeZkvKpAfo ) will allow the analysis.
The Purcerverance follow-up analysis provides insight to the the new setup efficiency based on the rowing technique and power application. The values measured using the six rigging analysis factors will show the efficiency of the setup. The sheet will include comments and recommendations related to any adjustments to improve rigging efficiency.
